In a society which encounters very rapid technological changes it becomes more and more difficult to remain permanent up-to-date with the latest technical developments. When it comes to network equipment and to network management, this tends to be even more difficult because of the impossibility to work with network components and also because of the high prices of some of the network devices. The access to a Virtual Networking Laboratory (VL) becomes a very useful solution to this problem.
Distance learning using virtual laboratories is nowadays a strong requirement mainly for specialists who need to be continuously trained on very expensive and modern equipment. Based on this requirement, the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg, Germany, Dept. of Computer Science has got a grant to develop a virtual laboratory with the purpose of carrying on distance training for network professionals in the area of network management. The web based access to the laboratory may be done from anywhere in the world via Internet. All these accesses are administrated and monitored by an adequate system.
The exercises were developed in such way that if the user succeeds in correctly configuring the accessed devices, then the experiment can be continued step by step. Otherwise, one has to go back, read the theory basics (accessible also in the VL), reconfigure the devices properly and continue the experiment. This procedure allows a very practical understanding of the network management technology.
